How Parkinson’s Disease Affects Speech—and How LSVT LOUD® Can Help
At Trio Voice & Speech Consulting, we understand that Parkinson’s Disease affects more than just movement—it affects your voice, your confidence, and your ability to connect with others.
Over 80% of individuals with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) will experience communication difficulties during their lifetime. The good news? Evidence-based speech therapy can help—and it works.
What Is Parkinson’s Disease?
Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a progressive neurological condition caused by the loss of dopamine-producing neurons in the brain. While it’s best known for motor symptoms like tremor and stiffness, PD also impacts the systems involved in speech and communication.
The Impact of Parkinson’s on Communication
PD affects three key systems involved in speech:
Respiratory System
PD reduces breath support, making speech softer and less sustained. Many individuals run out of air mid-sentence or speak in a whisper.
Phonatory System
This system controls the vocal cords. In PD, it can result in hypophonia (soft speech), monotone voice, and vocal fatigue. Individuals may feel like they’re speaking loudly when in reality, their voice is difficult to hear.
Articulatory System
PD can cause reduced range and speed of movement in the tongue, lips, and jaw—leading to slurred, mumbled, or unclear speech.
LSVT LOUD®: The Gold Standard in PD Speech Therapy
At Trio Voice & Speech, we proudly offer LSVT LOUD®, a research-backed, intensive therapy program developed specifically for people with Parkinson’s Disease.
What Is LSVT LOUD®?
LSVT LOUD® (Lee Silverman Voice Treatment) is a structured therapy program that focuses on increasing vocal loudness through high-effort vocal exercises and recalibrating how clients perceive their own voice.
How It Works:
4 sessions/week for 4 weeks
1-on-1 intensive training
Focus on loud, clear speech
Emphasizes carryover into real-life situations
Why Early Speech Therapy Matters
Speech changes in PD often start subtly. Early intervention leads to better results and helps prevent more severe communication breakdowns. Even if you’re newly diagnosed or not yet noticing speech issues, it’s worth being proactive.
